douglasbooth The documentary ‘For Sama’ is a vitally important, unflinching and heart-wrenching look at the war in Syria. This is an often forgotten war which does not always receive the media coverage and outrage that it deserves, despite being waged against its own people for nearly a decade. The film lays bare the terrible plight of a young family trying to survive as the shells and bombs of the Syrian regime and their allies appear to fall deliberately on and around the hospital where they work. The immensity of the suffering endured by these families is almost unimaginable.
There are men, women and children facing exactly the same plight in Idlib, northern Syria, right now. Innocent people are losing their lives, their families left with unendurable grief. These are the consequences of the reckless agendas of powerful leaders and of governments who condone the sale and use of arms intended to kill civilians. When wars like this, including Yemen, rage on an on, we should not allow ourselves to forget the continued and terrible suffering of the innocent people involved. Do not forget the power of your voice and your vote. If you are able to, please donate to @refugees @chooselove #withrefugees #chooselove

douglasbooth Today is #WorldRefugeeDay and I have just arrived in Catania, Sicily. This will be my third trip with @refugees. UNHCR’s global trends report states that there are now over 70 million forcibly displaced people, a significant increase from the staggering 65 million reported 4 years ago when I visited @refugees in Lesvos and then subsequently in Iraq in 2016. The news spotlight on this humanitarian emergency comes and goes over time but the crisis nevertheless continues to grow.
I am in Sicily to meet some of the people forced to flee their homes because of war, conflict and prejudice, to put faces and stories to the statistics and to visit young asylum seekers who are helping to organise a Refugee talent event aimed at bringing divided and often traumatized communities together in a shared experience of entertainment.
This collective celebration of young people sees them engage through performance, organisation, technical production and audience participation. These events give hope and motivation to often forgotten populations. Follow my feed over the next few days to see some of the work @refugees and their local partners are doing on the ground to support and give hope to some of most vulnerable in Europe.
