⠀
Felix Dennis: 'After the Oz trial, I stayed with John Lennon. He was very, very kind to us. After the trial, he let me come and stay with him in his fancy country home - because there was a media frenzy. I took my girlfriend. I had a great time there watching him lay down the basic tracks to 'Imagine'. One of the great moments of my life. And one night, when he'd stopped working, he did an acoustic version of 'Mother' and it was just terrifying.'

johnlennonofficialThe Beatles - YESTERDAY AND TODAY, 1966⠀
Signed 'To Dave from John Lennon, Dec 7th 71'⠀
A U.S. First State Butcher album prototype stereo example, considered by Beatles experts as one of the rarest Beatles records in the world. The recipient was Dave Morrell, a Beatles fan and bootleg collector, traded for a reel-to-reel tape of Morrell’s 'Yellow Matter Custard' bootleg that Lennon desired. Lennon filled the blank back of the cover with an original piece of art (see yesterday's post) depicting a man holding a shovel with his dog in front of a setting sun. The cover also includes autographs by Ringo Starr and Paul McCartney, which Morrell obtained later. This is believed to be the only First State Butcher album bearing three Beatles signatures.

johnlennonofficialJOHN & RINGO, 1980⠀
Ringo: 'I saw him on the 15th November. I was staying at The Plaza. We went over to New York for a while. And I hadn't seen him for a while because, you know, we see each other wherever we are. And he came over with Yoko for an hour and we had such a great time because they stayed five hours. And it didn't matter that it was a year between we didn't see each other, it was always fine when we did, but it was a particularly great time that we, that I had, anyway... Oh, man, they were happy. They were two people in one.'

johnlennonofficialBAG ONE, 1970⠀
London Arts Gallery was the first gallery to exhibit John Lennon’s Bag One lithographs. The signed and numbered lithographs included five prints that were erotic or offensive depending on whom you asked. ⠀
⠀
The Gallery came to the notice of an international public when in 1970, its then owner Eugene Schuster was charged with corrupting morals when he exhibited erotic drawings by Beatle John Lennon of himself and Yoko Ono. Eight of the fourteen lithographs were confiscated by Scotland Yard on the grounds of indecency. ⠀
⠀
Ultimately Mr. Schuster was cleared of charges, and the prints returned to the gallery where a second exhibit was greeted with even more public enthusiasm. The critics remained divided on both the subject of obscenity in art and the artistic merit of John Lennon’s lithographs.⠀

'Woman, I will try to express
My inner feelings and thankfulness
For showing me the meaning of success’
John: ‘One sunny afternoon in Bermuda, it suddenly hit me what women do for us… everything that I was taking for granted – because that’s the way we were brought up. My history of relationships with women is very poor – very macho, very stupid, but pretty typical of a certain type of man, which I was, I suppose – a very insecure, sensitive person acting out very aggressive and macho. Trying to cover up the feminine side, which I still have a tendency to do, but I'm learning. I'm learning that it's all right to be soft and allow that side of me out. Women really are the other half of the sky, as I whisper at the beginning of the song. It’s a 'we' or it ain’t anything.' 1980

johnlennonofficialPARIS, 1961⠀
John: "Paris has always been the object of English romanticism, hasn't it? I fell for Paris first of all, even before Hamburg. I remember spending my 21st birthday there with Paul in 1961" ⠀
⠀
In October 1961, @JohnLennon and @PaulMcCartney hitch-hiked to Paris with the £100 Aunt Mater had given John for his 21st birthday. They hung out with their photographer friend Jürgen Vollmer and returned to Liverpool a fortnight later, having traded in their 'rocker' haircuts for a new combed down, diagonally styled look (that from then on would famously be known as Beatle 'mop top' haircuts), styled by Jürgen.⠀
Here's John, photographed by Jürgen, under the Eiffel Tower in Paris in early October 1961.
johnlennonofficialLETTER TO JÜRGEN VOLLMER, APRIL 1975⠀
Dear Jurgen,⠀
Glad you liked Rock n Roll. The music book is even better. Ask Connie for a copy. If you don’t have one. Anyway… yes I do remember the photos you did. I remember the meeting etc in Paris very well. In fact I’m amazed at how much I DO remember! (e.g. the beautiful ballet dancer friend of yours in hamburg [crossed out] just my luck!)⠀
⠀
So I don’t really know what to write for you … here goes …⠀
⠀
‘Jurgen Vollmer was the first photographer to capture the beauty, and spirit of The Beatles, (tho I say it myself)! We tried very hard to find someone with his touch after we returned from Hamburg Germany … nobody could. He loved Rockers … and Rock and Roll … the photographs speak for themselves.’⠀
⠀
I hope this will do,⠀
If you want more … or less … let me know ⠀
Love,⠀
John '75⠀
⠀
PS there’s a book coming out – ‘Macmillan Publishers’ – it's by Allan Williams (he took us to Hamburg first) – it’s all about ‘THEN’ – Liverpool/Hamburg – pre Brian Epstein – its called ‘THE MAN WHO GAVE AWAY THE BEATLES’ – quite funny – and sad.
