What the Australian PM should have said:
Australia.
Our country is burning. It’s burning and it’s breaking our hearts and homes. Hope for a blue sky is smothered with each glowing red sunrise. Fear for the future sinks in as the sun sets, barely visible as we choke.
This is not just another summer of bushfires. This is the climate crisis, it’s here, we are here. These are the climate fires. The drought with no end in sight.
The children are right. The youth are always right. We have ignored them and ignored the science and now we are on the brink of extinction. Other species have gone extinct by our doing.
I am sorry.
I am here now, for you and for our country. I will act.
I have provided funding for the firefighters, for the farmers, for the future.
I will attend the emergency summit.
We will limit global warming to less than 1.5 degrees.
We will keep coal in the ground.
We will listen to the science.
We will listen to the traditional custodians of the land.
We will create carbon sinks by planting trees.
Use solar power.
The climate crisis is here and we will no longer turn a blind eye. We must fight.

Trees play a vital role in the water cycle. As well as drinking water through their roots (which can buffer flooding) trees transpire, releasing water through their leaves into the air. This creates a humid and temperate zones wherever trees are, allowing complex habitats for bio diversity to thrive. Forest canopies buffer climate extremes, creating microclimates that can serve as refuge for smaller species to survive beneath them, mitigating the impact of extreme weather conditions.
Additionally, almost half of all rainfall is driven by this combined process of evapotranspiration by forests.
