prince Beck recently visited Prince's legendary Studio A at Paisley Park. The resulting Paisley Park Sessions EP captures a near-impromptu jam by Beck and his band, who performed two of Beck’s own songs in addition to a medley of Prince’s iconic hits. • Beck is the first major music artist to record in Prince’s Studio A since his passing in 2016, and his session signifies a new era of creative activity for the historic complex, which is now operated wholly by The Prince Estate. Studio A was Prince's primary workspace for over three decades, and the space where he wrote and recorded countless hits. • • "I've heard the name since I was a child—Paisley Park—and you sort of imagine this place," Beck said. prince 20 years ago today, Prince released his star-studded album Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic. • For the first time in his career, Prince enlisted an array of established pop, folk, and hip-hop musicians from across the music industry to make cameo appearances on the album, including Sheryl Crow, Gwen Stefani, Ani DiFranco, Eve, and Chuck D. • Rave Un2 the Joy Fantastic was one of Prince’s most highly marketed releases of the 1990s, and around the time of its release he gave interviews with media outlets around the world. As he noted in his interviews, although Rave was released under his unpronounceable symbol (which he would continue using as his name until May 16, 2000), the album was produced by Prince, signifying a new evolution in his identity. • "When you do allow yourself to have a ’different’ producer on an album, I allowed him to have the final say," Prince told the Star Tribune in 1999. "As strange as that may sound, it’s really not strange. Look at it this way: Malcolm X thinks differently than Malcolm Little. When you’re trying to change, you have to divorce yourself from the past.” • Prince promoted the release with the In Demand Pay-Per-View concert Rave Un2 the Year 2000, which aired on New Year’s Eve, 1999 and featured special guests like Maceo Parker, Larry Graham, George Clinton, and Lenny Kravitz performing with Prince at Paisley Park. • Both the album and a DVD of the New Year's Eve concert were reissued by Sony Legacy earlier this year, along with Prince's 2001 remix album Rave In2 the Joy Fantastic. prince The Prince Estate, in partnership with @WarnerRecords, is pleased to announce the release of "Don’t Let Him Fool Ya,” the third vault track to be issued in advance of the Super Deluxe Edition of #Prince1999. • "Don’t Let Him Fool Ya” was recorded in the summer of 1982 at Prince's home studio in Chanhassen, Minn., with recording engineer Don Batts. prince On his 2004 album Musicology, Prince intertwined memories of his musical influences and personal history to create an album of "real music by real musicians." In addition to the singles "Musicology," "Call My Name," and "Cinnamon Girl," the album ended with one of Prince's most personal songs to date, "Reflection." • The lyrics of "Reflection" blended his tender feelings toward his then-wife, Manuela Testolini, with his memories of his mother and his youth. "Remember all the way back in the day / When we would compare whose afro was the roundest / Mirrored tiles above the bed / Fishing nets and posters all over the wall," he sang. • Prince would reunite with the Revolution's Wendy Melvoin to perform the song "Reflection" on The Tavis Smiley Show in February 2004. It's a song that "most people don't know," Manuela told Forbes earlier this year, but one that has stayed with her all these years. "He recorded that song in front of me when he was teaching me about stream of consciousness writing," she said. "And it was very, very beautiful and very organic and heartfelt. prince 40 years ago today, Prince released his second, self-titled album on @WarnerRecords, including the breakout hits "I Wanna Be Your Lover," "Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad?" and the song that would eventually earn him a Grammy, "I Feel For You." • In 1979, Prince was still a mysterious new emerging artist, and had yet to fully emerge on the national stage. The year was filled with several firsts for Prince: he began 1979 with his first live shows as a solo artist, which took place at the Capri Theater in North Minneapolis on January 5 and 6, and ended it with the first leg of his Prince Tour and his first televised appearance on American Bandstand, which was filmed on December 16. • He spent much of 1979 writing and recording the songs that would appear on Prince—including "I Feel For You," which he was working out around the time that he played his historic Capri Theater shows. The two-track vinyl single includes the acoustic demo of “I Feel for You” on the A-side and the original studio recording on the B-side, and is available as a Made to Order release exclusively at Prince.com for the next seven days only. https://store.prince.com/store • • The special, stripped-down demo recording captures a 20-year-old Prince in a raw, intimate moment, and begins with the sound of the artist pressing the record button on a cassette tape recorder and picking up an acoustic guitar. The recording was created in the winter of 1978-1979, around the time Prince was preparing to make his solo debut at the Capri Theater in North Minneapolis, and it was recently rediscovered on one of the countless cassette tapes stored in his legendary vault. • • “I was blown away,” says Prince vault archivist Michael Howe. “Here is 20-year-old Prince thinking aloud, feeling his way through the song. You hear his incredible talent shining through on acoustic guitar, which is not something he typically showcased, and his guide vocal is astonishingly great.” • • The fully produced, studio recording of “I Feel For You” was included on Prince’s second album, Prince. It would become a hit a few years later, when it was covered by Chaka Khan and released as the title track of her solo album, I Feel for You, in 1984. prince On November 29, fans around the world will have the opportunity to take an unprecedented deep dive into Prince's legendary vault with the Super Deluxe Edition of the reissue of 1999, which will contain 35 previously unreleased tracks and a previously unreleased live concert on DVD. • Beginning today, fans can hear another one of those historic vault tracks: the 1st ever take of "International Lover," recorded by Prince and Morris Day on January 14, 1982. • The winter of 1981-1982 was a fiercely prolific time in Prince's career. In between stints of the Controversy Tour, he would hole up in his home studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota, and at Sunset Sound in Los Angeles to dream up the songs that would catapult him to fame on his own double album, 1999, and the albums of his two budding protege projects, The Time and Vanity 6. • Working under the producer pseudonym Jamie Starr, Prince brought Morris Day into the studio to begin work on The Time's second album, What Time Is It? On January 14, 1982, in between sessions of recording The Time song "The Walk," Prince and Morris shifted to working on a new song, "International Lover." It's a song that would eventually end up on Prince's own album, 1999, but on that day it was imagined as a possibility for The Time, and Prince's vocal take provided the lead for where he envisioned Morris's voice would go. • With Prince on piano and Morris on drums, the first take of "International Lover" provides a fascinating glimpse of Prince's collaborative process and studio demeanor. He turns on a dime between soulful singing and playful banter, and at one point he can't contain his laughter during an extended riff about flying "Morris International." On this day in 2014, he released two full-length albums simultaneously: a new solo album, ART OFFICIAL AGE, and the debut from his band 3RDEYEGIRL, PLECTRUMELECTRUM. • • The release of the two albums came amidst a flurry of activity from Prince. That summer he performed and gave a rare televised interview on the @arseniohall show, made a cameo on @newgirlonfox and headlined the @essencefest. On the day of his dual release, he hosted a live-streamed concert at @officialpaisleypark for @yahoo, which included a once-in-a-lifetime collaboration with the rising rap star @kendricklamar. • • To commemorate the occasion, Prince also launched his official page on Facebook and solicited questions from fans for an exclusive Q&A. After receiving over 4,000 questions, however, he only answered one of them. • • In response to the inquiry, "Please address the importance of ALL music being tuned to 432hz sound frequencies??" Prince linked to an article about music frequencies and wrote "The Gold Standard" — a nod to the title of a track on ART OFFICIAL AGE.

prince Prince loved to share a laugh with those around him. As those who knew him can attest, he was constantly cracking jokes and setting up elaborate pranks to play on unsuspecting friends. Thankfully a few of those notorious pranks played out on the public stage for all to see — like the time he made a surprise appearance on the @todayshow in 1997 in honor of #BryantGumbel's last day, dressed head-to-toe like Gumbal and doing a spot-on impression of the beloved journalist. • • "It's a look!" @katiecouric proclaimed, as Bryant held his head in shock and laughed hysterically. • While he was on set, Prince sat down at the piano and performed a medley of "Take Me With U," "Raspberry Beret," James Brown's "Talkin' Loud and Sayin' Nothin'," and an unreleased song he wrote just for Bryant Gumbel. • • In recent years, Bryant shared that he had the opportunity to collaborate with Prince around that time, when he asked the artist to compose a theme song for his then-new show, Public Eye With Bryant Gumbel, which was set to launch in 1998. • • "He took a run at it and I didn't like it," Gumbel told the @latimes. "After three tries I called it off. It was becoming embarrassing — a guy who can't read music can't tell Mozart, 'No, this isn't good.' prince This Friday, three Prince albums from the mid-1990s will be reissued on CD and vinyl: Chaos and Disorder, Emancipation, and the mixtape The Versace Experience (Prelude 2 Gold), which will be widely released for the first time ever. • • • In a provocative era when he was only identified by his unpronounceable symbol, The Versace Experience was released to foreshadow The Gold Experience, and included exclusive remixes of 10 out of the 15 tracks that would eventually appear on that album, including rare versions of future hits “Gold,” “P. Control” and “Eye Hate U.” • • • It also contained unreleased material from other side projects, including the New Power Generation’s second album Exodus, Madhouse’s 24, and The NPG Orchestra’s Kamasutra. • • • The Versace Experience is an exceptionally rare Prince release. prince While touring around the world to perform for his “fams,” Prince would often follow up his arena concerts with smaller, looser, heavily improvised aftershows that would stretch into the next morning. In the early hours of August 28, 1998, Prince performed one of those aftershows for an intimate crowd of invite-only guests at the Café de Paris in London—and because it was filmed for a broadcast on the U.K.’s Channel 4 and released on home video, it became one of his most legendary aftershows of all time. • • Released under the title Beautiful Strange, the concert came at the end of the Artist’s New Power Soul tour, and coincided with the Paisley Park Records release of his New Power Generation album New Power Soul, Chaka Khan’s Come 2 My House, and Graham Central Station’s GCS 2000. Prince was joined at the aftershow by his labelmates @chakaikhan and Larry Graham, plus the rapper Doug E. prince On this day in 1991, Prince performed "Gett Off" on the @mtv @vmas with his band, the New Power Generation, dressed in an unforgettable yellow lace suit. • • • The performance came at a moment of reinvention for Prince, who had been refining the backing band that would make their recording debut on the Prince and the New Power Generation release Diamonds and Pearls on October 1, 1991. "Gett Off" had been released as the first single from the album earlier that summer, and the steamy, Randee St. Nicholas-directed video had debuted on MTV in August. • • • For his MTV Video Music Awards performance, Prince and a cast of dancers brought the "Gett Off" video to life. • • • "The show was like a 1990s version of Caligula, with Roman columns aflame in the background while an orgy of dancers writhed sensually in every direction around the creative genius," @billboard wrote. • • • A few minutes into the already magnetic performance, Prince removed his yellow Cloud guitar and spun around to reveal his boldest statement of all: two symmetrical openings on the backside of his yellow lace pants, which he accentuated with a booty shake and a smile. • • • Decades later, one of Prince's clothing designers, @Stacialangdesign, still remembers the moment when she first sketched the "butt-out pants" for Prince. • • • After receiving her directions, she brought two sketches to Prince's office for review. "It was just him and me... looking at the sketch... so quietly," Lang continued. "I cleared my throat and said, 'Prince, I've done two versions for you, one with more exposure, and one with less.' Without a word, he took a pencil and put an X thru the version with 'more exposure.' After all, a man must have some semblance of modesty, right?"

prince When Prince released Chaos and Disorder in July 1996, it came amidst a tense split with his longtime label and was minimally promoted by either Prince or Warner Bros. Records. prince In 1996, Prince released a staggering amount of new music, including his final studio album for @warnermusic, Chaos and Disorder; and the triple-album Emancipation, his first independent release distributed in a partnership between his own NPG Records and EMI. 🔸 Rather than hit the road to promote his final Warner Bros. release, Prince instead spent much of 1996 holed up in his studios at @officialpaisleypark, working closely with his longtime drummer Kirk Johnson to capture dozens and dozens of new songs. He whittled a list of nearly 100 tracks down to 36 for the three-disc set Emancipation. 🔸 Some of the tracks on Emancipation dealt directly with his professional battles — including “Slave,” “Emancipation,” and the blistering “Face Down” — while many more reflected on his tender feelings toward his new wife, Mayte Garcia. 🔸 The album also marked the first time in his career that he included covers of other artist’s songs on one of his own releases, including the touching ballads “I Can’t Make You Love Me” (@bonnieraittofficial) and “Betcha By Golly, Wow!” (The Stylistics). 🔸 “I’ve been recording almost every day of my life, working on a vast number of styles,” Prince told @rollingstone when Emancipation was released. “I’ve always looked forward to the day when I would be free from any demands of any kind from anyone—free to do everything I want to do.” 🔸 On September 13, Emancipation will be reissued on CD and available on vinyl for the very first time, along with Chaos and Disorder and the rare mixtape The Versace Experience: Prelude 2 Gold. 🔸 Preorder now: https://prince.lnk.to/1995-1996

prince The opening chords of "Purple Rain" have become so iconic, and so instantly recognizable, that it's hard to imagine them being played for the very first time. ••• But that's exactly what happened on the night of August 3, 1983, when Prince and his freshly minted band, the Revolution, introduced the audience of 1,100 people at @firstavenue to an extended performance of their new song. ••• The concert was a benefit for the local @mndancetheatre, who had been coaching Prince and his new band through dance rehearsals at their downtown Minneapolis studio in preparation for their upcoming film. To show his appreciation, Prince used the concert to debut a new lineup of his group — guitarist Dez Dickerson had left the band, and was replaced by the 19-year-old phenom Wendy Melvoin — and a handful of never-before-heard songs that would soon be known by fans around the world. ••• Incredibly, three of the songs Prince and the Revolution debuted that night would end up making their way onto the soundtrack for Purple Rain, with only minor modifications: "Baby, I'm a Star," "I Would Die 4 U," and the momentous "Purple Rain." A mobile recording truck manned by the engineer David "Z." Rivkin, brother of Bobby Z., was parked outside the club and captured the historic performance for the album and film. ••• "'Purple Rain' was the song Prince and the Revolution were born to record," Bobby Z. recalled in the liner notes to Purple Rain Deluxe. "Recorded live at First Avenue, it forever captures a frozen moment in time — a time when Prince knew what he had. The hits, the album, the band, the movie. He had arrived."

prince On this day in 1984, Prince and the Revolution appeared at Mann's Chinese Theater in Hollywood for the premiere of Purple Rain, the film that would catapult them to global fame. ••• The star-studded premiere was broadcast on @mtv and attended by big names from across music, comedy, and film, including Eddie Murphy, @davidbyrneofficial, Christopher Reeve, @johnmellencamp, and Fleetwood Mac's @stevienicks and @lindseybuckingham. But few stars garnered the same level of hysteria on the red carpet as Prince, who emerged from a purple limousine and walked quietly through the mayhem holding a single purple rose. ••• “His royal badness, Prince!" shouted MTV's @goodymade. ••• Inside the theater, Prince took his seat next to members of the Revolution — Bobby Z., @wendyandlisa, Dr. Fink, and Brownmark — and his co-star @apollonia_kotero to watch his new film in the theater for the first time. The film's soundtrack had already been released the month prior, and the single "When Doves Cry" had shot to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, with "Let's Go Crazy" soon to follow. ••• The day after the Mann's Chinese Theater premiere, Purple Rain would open nationwide to wild success, grossing over $68 million at the box office in the U.S.

prince At 12pm CT tomorrow the official video for "Holly Rock," the second single from the critically acclaimed album Originals, will premiere on @youtube. Prince wrote and recorded the song for @sheilaedrummer in April 1985, the very same week he recorded the hit single "Kiss" for his own album, Parade. The new "Holly Rock" single will be presented for streaming and download on Thursday, July 25. It will be accompanied by a vibrant new animated video created by London-based Electric Light Studios, and co-produced by The Prince Estate and @warnerrecords.

prince From the time they first crossed paths with one another backstage in 1978 up until the final years of Prince’s career, @sheilaedrummer and Prince shared a meaningful and career-spanning musical bond. 🔸 Of the 15 tracks included on the new Prince album Originals, three were co-written by Sheila E. — “Noon Rendezvous,” “Holly Rock,” and “Dear Michaelangelo” — and one was given to her and became the title track of her debut album, “The Glamorous Life.” Although all four tracks were written and recorded within the span of just a few years in the 1980s, they showcase just how quickly 🔸 Prince was evolving during this pivotal era of his career — and how significantly Sheila’s percussion style was influencing his work. “That’s the good thing about Prince: you can see how he was influenced by the people around him,” Sheila told @time in 2014. “I can hear and see it, because I got to live the influence that I had on him as well as the influence he had on me.” 🔸 It was Prince who encouraged Sheila to try singing in the studio on the track “Erotic City,” and who suggested she pursue a solo career after years of playing percussion for other artists. In December 1983 he had recorded a demo for the song “The Glamorous Life,” and with the addition of Shiela’s vocals and percussion to it in the spring of 1984 it became a massive hit. “The Glamorous Life” skyrocketed to #1 on the dance charts and climbed into the Top 10 on the Billboard Hot 100, while Sheila’s debut album The Glamorous Life was certified gold. 🔸 “It seemed like only five minutes ago that he’d persuaded me to sing a duet with him. Now he’d convinced me that I should be the lead singer in my own band! We worked three days solid without sleep because we were both so excited about the project,” Sheila recounted in her memoir. 🔸 The song “Noon Rendezvous” was also included on Sheila’s debut album, while the playful “Holly Rock” was featured on the soundtrack for the 1985 film Krush Groove, in which Sheila also starred, and “Dear Michaelangelo” was released on her 1985 album Romance 1600. 🔸 Hear Prince sing these Sheila E. hits on Originals, which was released worldwide by @warnerrecords June 21st.

prince Jill Jones met Prince in 1980 on the Dirty Mind Tour, when she was singing backing vocals for his opening act, Teena Marie. By 1982 both a romantic and creative relationship had developed between the two artists, and Jill was logging countless hours alongside Prince at the historic Sunset Sound studio in Los Angeles. 🔸 In addition to singing background vocals on songs that Prince would release under his own name, Jill would also contribute to the tracks that Prince was creating for proteges like The Time, Apollonia 6, and Sheila E. 🔸 In an interview with the New York Times, Jill recalled always being prepared to record, whether it was the middle of the afternoon or 3:00 a.m. “Before cellphones, somehow he found us,” she said. “You’d go straight to the studio.” 🔸 Of all the artists that Prince would collaborate with during this prolific era of his career, Jill Jones’ presence was among the most consistent. Her voice can be heard on some of Prince’s biggest hits, including “1999,” and in the background of countless other songs, where she provided a backbone for the melody as a supporting vocalist. 🔸 It’s no wonder, then, that Jill Jones appears three times on the new Prince album Originals: in addition to singing the backing vocals on “Baby, You’re a Trip,” which would later appear on the 1987 solo album she made with Prince for his Paisley Park Records imprint, she can also be heard on Prince’s recordings of “Jungle Love” and “Manic Monday.” 🔸 “You didn’t really know Prince unless you had been in the studio with him,” Jill told the New York Times. "Those were the best years: living, breathing, eating music.”

prince By 1981, Prince was writing and recording more music than he could possibly release under his own name. At the same time, his creative impulses were pulling him in several different directions, to the point that he had evolved several different personas in the studio. 🔸 One of Prince's first spin-off projects was The Time, which was centered around his high school friend and bandmate, Morris Day, and several musicians from their North Minneapolis neighborhood. Prince and Morris had cut their teeth together in the band Grand Central, playing school dances and Battle of the Bands showcases alongside rivals like Flyte Tyme, a band led by Terry Lewis. 🔸 Before a live band had even been assembled, Prince began writing hard-driving funk songs and working up a concept for a band that would allow him to play up his North Side influences. "What we were trying to do — and Prince was masterminding the whole situation — was come up with a name and sayings that you'd have to say every day," Morris Day recalled in a 2011 documentary. '"He came up with 'the Time,' which I thought was pretty clever." 🔸 The Time combined members of Flyte Tyme with Morris and the guitarist Jesse Johnson, who had just arrived in town from Illinois. The band was photographed for the cover of The Time's debut album, The Time, and the songs were credited to Morris Day and producer Jamie Starr. But despite Morris's insistence in interviews that Jamie Starr was a real, separate person, the album had been almost entirely recorded by Prince alone. 🔸 "It was Morris playing drums and me on the bass. That’s how we would make the basic track. Naked,” Prince told Ebony in 2015. “Just like that, and nobody would know. And then when you put the keys on it and the guitar, then that’s what the Time was. And it was perfect.” 🔸 One of the tracks on the new Originals album, "Gigolos Get Lonely Too," captures Prince in that naked state, diving deep for an emotional ballad. Another track, the hit he co-wrote with Morris and Jesse Johnson, "Jungle Love," captures a candid laugh and playful vocal delivery from Prince as he offers a guide for Morris Day to use while adding his voice to the song.🔸

prince Of the many people Prince worked with during the pivotal era of his early-1980s career, few had the opportunity to watch his creative process unfold as closely as the engineer Peggy McCreary, who worked alongside Prince in the studio beginning in 1981. Beginning with the Controversy album, Peggy was Prince's engineer when he was in Los Angeles to record at the historic Sunset Sound studio. In addition to the material he released under his own name, Peggy was there as Prince laid down tracks for countless other artists, from proteges like Vanity 6, The Time, and Apollonia 6 to those outside his immediate orbit like @officialthebangles. In that prolific era, Prince was often tracking multiple songs in a day, scribbling lyrics on the back of envelopes or napkins as the songs poured out of him. "These songs were a snapshot of what he was thinking and feeling on that day in the studio. You can hear if he was in love, if he was hurt, or if he was lonely in every phrase because it was just him," Peggy writes in the liner notes for Originals, a new album of Prince's original recordings of the songs he gave to other people. prince Prince was constantly toying with the public's perceptions of his sexuality, upbringing, and cultural identity. This shape-shifting wasn’t just happening on stage; behind the scenes, he was also adopting various pseudonyms that allowed him to explore different facets of his creative persona. Beginning with 2 of his first proteges, the Time and Vanity 6, in the early 1980s, Prince would leave his own name out of the liner notes and credit the albums to Jamie Starr or the Starr Company. The sleight-of-hand worked so well that when the Time released their first 2 albums in 1981 and 1982 — which were almost exclusively written and recorded by Prince — the general public had no idea he was involved. “Jamie Starr is an engineer,” @morris_day_and_the_time told @rollingstone in 1983. A 1984 single for Sheena Easton, “Sugar Walls,” was credited to Alexander Nevermind, while the @officialthebangles breakout “Manic Monday” was attributed to Christopher, a name that played on Prince's character in the film Under the Cherry Moon. Each name seemed to give Prince permission to explore a different side of his personality, from the grittier vibe of the Time with Jamie Starr to the country-leaning Joey Coco to the gender fluid falsetto of his alter-ego, Camille. In the 1980s, the music industry was still deeply segregated along racial lines. Even though Prince’s music transcended genre and combined everything from R&B, funk, and gospel to punk and pop, his singles were relegated to the R&B charts for much of his early career. Using different pseudonyms forced the industry to hear his work based on its merit and made it possible for his different identities to chart simultaneously. “I was just getting tired of seeing my name,” the artist told Bass Player Magazine. For Prince, music was the primary focus of his life, and everything else was secondary - including his own identity. “If you give away an idea, you still own that idea,” he continued. prince In early 1984, Prince was on the cusp of global fame and working at an extraordinary pace. Just months before releasing his watershed soundtrack and film, Purple Rain, Prince was deep into preparations for his massive Purple Rain Tour while also writing and recording nearly a song a day for artists like @sheilaedrummer, The Time, and The Family. One of those songs, “Manic Monday,” was recorded in February 1984 and was originally intended for the group Apollonia 6, who would be introduced to the world that summer in the film Purple Rain. But before their debut album was complete, he decided to pull "Manic Monday" from the Apollonia 6 album and give it to another up-and-coming band instead. @officialthebangles were part of a new movement of Los Angeles musicians dubbed "The Paisley Underground" who were bridging the synth beats of the '80s with psychedelic '60s influences, and Prince was a fan of their songs. "I knew it was an incredible gift," the Bangles' lead singer @susannahoffsofficial told the @nytimes, remembering back to the day she picked up the cassette of "Manic Monday" from Sunset Sound. "It was like putting on the slipper in a fairy tale." Using Prince's recording as a guide, the Bangles put their own spin on "Manic Monday," rearranging a bridge and adapting it to suit their sound. Their version of "Manic Monday" was included on their album Different Light and became their first breakout hit, skyrocketing to the top of the Billboard Hot 100. It peaked at the number 2 spot, just behind Prince's own hit single "Kiss." All these years later, however, Hoffs and her Bangles band mates remember how entranced they were when they first heard Prince's original rendition of the song. For over 30 years, they were some of the only people in the world to have heard it — until this month. Prince's rendition of "Manic Monday" is one of the 15 tracks on the new album Originals, a collection of Prince's versions of the hit songs he gave to other artists. The album is streaming exclusively on @tidal now, and will be released worldwide by @warnerrecords on June 21.

prince Of the many surprises included on the new Prince release Originals, “You’re My Love” stands out to listeners for several reasons. First, it’s one of the only unreleased recordings on the album that captures Prince singing in a lower register, crooning his way through the soft ballad. And second, it’s one of the only songs from the collection that Prince gave to an artist he wasn’t immediately connected with; rather than pass the song along to one of his proteges, Prince gave “You’re My Love” to the country icon @_kennyrogers.🔸 Writing under the name Joey Coco, Prince seemed to tap into an entirely new persona with “You’re My Love.” It’s a straightforward love song, and its lyrics sound relatively tame in comparison to the sexually charged pop hits that Prince was cranking out in 1982, when he recorded his version of “You’re My Love” at his Kiowa Trail home studio in Chanhassen, Minnesota. 🔸 Rather than use any of Prince’s instrumentation, Kenny Rogers would end up completely recording the track for his 1986 album They Don’t Make Them Like They Used To, even changing the key to suit Rogers’ voice. But Rogers treasured the fact that the original recording featured him singing and playing all of the instruments. 🔸 “It was such an incredible thing that Prince took the time to do that for me,” Rogers shared in 2017. “He was a brilliant guy and a gifted musician with a lot of feelings, and you could tell his feelings went far deeper than what was written on his face.” 🔸 Prince’s original rendition of “You’re My Love” has remained locked in his legendary vault of unreleased recordings until now. prince In the summer of 1984, Prince was creating new work at an incomprehensible pace. In the span of just two months he released the soundtrack and film, Purple Rain, hit albums from @sheilaedrummer and the Time, and was already halfway through recording his next album, Around the World in a Day. ✨ In June and July 1984, just as the world was waking up to the genius of his artistry, he was busy forming yet another side project: The Family, a band led by @stpaulpeterson of the Time and Prince’s romantic interest and muse, @susannahmelvoin. ✨ “He got pleasure out of his own ability to create in an instant,” Susannah told the New York Times. “The endorphin came from allowing the spigot to be constantly running.” ✨ One of those songs was “Nothing Compares 2 U,” which would become a global hit for @oconnor.sinead in 1990 but was originally given to the Family in 1984. Engineer Susan Rogers, who captured Prince’s initial recording of the song, says the lyrics dug into his intense feelings for Susannah, and were also informed by his sadness over the departure of a young woman who worked for him. ✨ “His young housekeeper, Sandy Scipioni, had to leave suddenly to be with her family because her father died of a heart attack,” Susan told the @guardian. “He kept asking, ‘When’s Sandy coming back?’” Prince wrote the song in under an hour, and laid down most of the parts himself. Susannah sang backing vocals, and the saxophonist Eric Leeds added an additional solo. And then Prince handed off the song to his new side project, carefully instructing St. Paul to copy his melody and emotional delivery note for note. ✨ “These songs are like his children – he would say that very often,” Susannah told @nytimes. “He was the ultimate social worker.” Prince’s first 1984 recording of “Nothing Compares 2 U” is included on the new album Originals, which is streaming exclusively on @tidal. In addition to “Nothing Compares 2 U,” the album includes 14 never-before-heard original recordings of the songs Prince gave to other artists. It will be released by @warnerrecords June 21, with a vinyl release to follow July 19.
