tanyaloureynolds Quiet by Susan Cain - i LOVED this book so much that I'm going to write an ESSAY about it here. Am several years late to the Susan Cain party but I strongly recommend this to anyone who is, like me, generally quiet, shy and/or an introvert.
I have always felt like i am wired a bit wrong, for preffering to spend time alone than in large groups, for feeling exhausted after meeting new people, for sometimes at social events going to the bathroom just to sit by myself because it's all just a bit much, that generally even though i like to socialise, i often can't wait to leave a party as soon as i get there because parties are DIFFICULT, and for re-reading and re-checking an instagram post about 70 times before posting it (ahem). This book highlights the fact that even though this is so normal for like half of the population, it can feel abnormal because the western world is particularly geared up for extroverts. She talks about the quiet strength in the sometimes crippling sensitivity of introverts. Chapters upon chapters on how we should never dismiss or try to 'cure' shy children and that a great leader isn't always the person who talks the loudest.
To all the kids at school feeling sick to their stomachs whenever a teacher says 'work in groups,' or the people in the corner of the party waiting for an appropriate time to go home and watch a documentary and have a muller corner, I'm with ya. ✌
